Victoria Brazil

Victoria Brazil is an emergency physician, educator, simulation specialist and healthcare team coach.

She is Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director of the Simulation Service at Gold Coast Health, and leads the Bond University Translational Simulation Collaborative. Victoria’s main interests are in connecting education with patient care - through translational simulation in healthcare, and in developing high performing healthcare teams.

She has authored over 80 peer reviewed publications in health professions education, simulation and teamwork in healthcare. Victoria also writes for the International Clinician Educators Network blog and is Senior Editor at Advances in Simulation. Victoria is co-producer of Simulcast, a podcast about healthcare simulation.

Robyn Clay-Williams

Prof Robyn Clay-Williams leads a research program at Macquarie University, Australia, in human factors and resilient health care. Her expertise is in creating health systems that can function effectively in the presence of complexity and uncertainty. Currently she is developing new models of care to improve Emergency Department performance, and patient experience and outcomes for five vulnerable patient cohorts.

Eric Saindon

There are few Visual Effects Supervisors who have delivered bigger films than Eric Saindon. The original Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, Alita: Battle Angel, and all three Hobbit films are just the tip of the iceberg.

Eric joined Wētā FX in 1999 as a Creatures / Character Supervisor, where he was pivotal in the creation of Gollum for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Eric first moved into a VFX Supervisor role in 2006 for X-Men: The Last Stand. Since then, he has served in this capacity for most of his projects, while also managing pre-production and on-set duties.

Between blockbusters, Eric has shown a deft hand guiding smaller projects like Pete’s Dragon and David Lowery’s The Green Knight.

Eric has won an Academy Award® and a BAFTA for Avatar: The Way of Water. He has also won five Visual Effects Society Awards.

He is an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Lance Baily

Lance Baily, BA, EMT-B, is the Founder / CEO of HealthySimulation.com, which he started in 2010 while serving as the Director of the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. Lance also founded SimGHOSTS.org, the world’s only non-profit organization dedicated to supporting professionals operating healthcare simulation technologies. His co-edited Book: “Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Operations, Technology, and Innovative Practice” is cited as a key source for professional certification in the industry. Lance’s background also includes serving as a Simulation Technology Specialist for the LA Community College District, EMS fire fighting, Hollywood movie production, rescue diving, and global travel. He and his wife live with their two brilliant daughters and one crazy dachshund in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Andy Barr

Andy divides his time between two main roles, working as a Charge Anaesthetic Technician in the Cardiothoracic and ORL Theatres  at Te Toka Tumai Auckland and as a Simulation Educator across that organisation. Andy has a keen interest in teamwork, communication and wellbeing which has led to him being part of a team developing a workshop providing training on how to run hot debriefs.

Yolanda Bartram

Yolanda Bartram, also a Director of MEDICFX, has an award-winning career in make-up artistry, specializing in film and television. This background has given her a unique understanding of the importance of visual realism in medical simulation. As a silicone technician and moulage expert, she crafts intricate models that replicate the complexities of human anatomy, empowering learners to hone their skills with confidence.

Chris Beasley

Chris is the Nurse Manager of the Manawa Simulation Centre and Simulation Lead for Waitaha Canterbury. Chris is a graduate of the Centre for Medical Simulation Comprehensive Simulation Instructor Course and Advance Simulation Instructor Course.

Chris’s interests are in advanced debriefing for both simulation and clinical practice, training the trainer, and supporting in-situ simulation.  Chris is undertaking research in 2024 to identify if simulation design incorporates our diverse population.

Erin Carn-Bennett

Erin Carn-Bennett is a Simulation Nurse Educator for the Douglas Starship Simulation Programme. Her background is Children's Emergency Nursing and she has her Masters of Nursing. Erin has worked in numerous Senior Nursing Management roles across the motu. She is passionate about growing the next generation of leaders through psychologically safe and empowering simulation.

Emma Collins

Emma is a Senior Professional Practice Fellow within the Dept of Women’s and Children’s Health, Dunedin School of Medicine. She has a background in teaching medical students and nursing students for over 14 years. She holds a Master of Nursing, specialising in Child Health and has recently commenced a PhD looking at developing child health scenarios for teaching and learning using extended reality technology. Her nursing background is in paediatric nursing and remains working clinically in a paediatric inpatient setting. Her research interests are varied but include digital health, interprofessional learning, and extended reality technology in healthcare education. She is the current chair of the HiNZ Nursing and Midwifery Special Interest Group. She is a Fellow of HiNZ as well as a Senior Fellow for the Higher Education Academy UK.

Dr Scott Crawford

Dr. Crawford is Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at TTUHSC El Paso and Executive Director of the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS). In addition to his faculty position he also serves as the educational technology core consultant for the Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health, and is a board member for SimGHOSTS, a non-profit group dedicated to providing technology education and innovation to simulation centers worldwide. He has presented both in the US and internationally on topics related to audio/video design, information technology, simulation operations, task trainer design, and procedural training. He has served as a reviewer and author for standards of best practice and conference presentation topics related to simulation and technology supported  education. He is also Editor of the textbook Comprehensive Healthcare Simulation: Operations, Technology, and Innovative Practice.

Dr. Crawford completed his emergency medicine residency and served as Chief Resident of research and technology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in 2012. Dr. Crawford earned his M.D. from Rush University in Chicago in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in physics from The Colorado College in 2004. He continues to search for economical and innovative design ideas to enhance the world of healthcare education by bringing a more engaging and educational experience to all learners.

Iris S. Fontanilla

Iris is a Consultant Health Psychologist with extensive experience in developing mental and physical health wellbeing programs to patients, their whānau, staff/kaimahi, and communities for over 20 years. She is a pioneer in her clinical field as one of the first New Zealand trained Health Psychologists and is a highly sought- after subject matter expert in a myriad of health psychology related mahi. Iris is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer, Psychological Medicine, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.

She is a respected leader at Te Toka Tumai Auckland Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand and is the Clinical Lead for a team of dedicated Health Psychologists in Cardiovascular and Critical Care Medicine Departments to improve health outcomes and equity for Māori, Pacific, Whaikaha, and other minority groups. Iris has significant experience in governance. She is the newly appointed President-Elect of the New Zealand Psychological Society (NZPsS) and has previously held Executive positions within the NZPsS. Iris also developed the Institute of Health Psychology for which she is the Chair.

Dr Khang Hee Gan

Dr Khang Hee Gan is a Paediatric Emergency Specialist in Starship Children's Emergency Department. His simulation interests include psychologically safe teamwork and leadership training, and using simulation to push the boundaries of innovation to improve patient outcomes.

Nicole Heydenrijk

Nicole Heydenrijk, is a founder and Director of MEDICFX, a global leader in medical simulation products with 19 distributors worldwide. Her 30+ years of experience in special effects, combined with a passion for innovation, led her to create hyper-realistic training tools that bridge the gap between theory and practice for healthcare professionals. Nicole's unwavering focus on research and development ensures MEDICFX remains at the forefront of simulation technology.

Dylan Hill

Dylan has 10 years of experience working in simulation across the defence force, police and hospital-based settings. Currently, Dylan is a simulation technician based in Waitaha Canterbury. He has a keen interest in 3D printing as a hobby and enjoys exploring innovative ways to integrate it into healthcare simulation to improve training and increase efficiency to positively influence patient outcomes. Dylan's passion lies in leveraging technology to create realistic, effective training environments for healthcare professionals.

Erica Hinojosa

Erica Hinojosa is currently the Simulation Technology Manager at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) College of Nursing and Health Innovation (CONHI) Smart Hospital Facilities ™. She graduated from UTA with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation. Her background allows her to understand the medical and educational aspects of the simulation healthcare field. In December of 2018, she became a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) and in March of 2021 she became a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist-Advanced (CHSOS-A) through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). 

Erica is currently a member of Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), Gathering of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialist (SimGHOSTS), Simulation Professionals of Texas (SPOT), and Simulation User Network (SUN). Erica has active roles in SimGHOSTS by being a Board Member, President, Mentor, and Ambassador as well as in SPOT as the Oversight Planning Committee and Communication liaison.

Sarah Jackson

A qualified anaesthetist specialising in neuroanaesthesia, Sarah started as National Chief, Quality and Patient Safety on 1st July 2024 and is responsible for providing professional leadership for quality and patient safety in Te Whatu Ora. Sarah has been interested in clinical governance her entire career, being involved in audit, research, teaching (including simulation training) and quality and patient safety leadership. She has led changes to models of care and has established clinical governance boards at the district and regional level. She was the anaesthetic representative on the Cancer Services Planning – Surgical Services team, a group set up by Te Aho o Te Kahu, Cancer Control Agency, to look at how best to deliver surgical services to cancer patients in Aotearoa. Her previous research includes contributing to a study on ethnic disparities in postoperative mortality, with a specific focus on outcomes for Māori and non-Māori.

Gisela Kristono

Gisela completed her PhD in 2021 with the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia at University of Otago Wellington, investigating inflammatory biomarkers in acute coronary syndrome. She continues to be involved in various clinical and translational research projects while working as a junior doctor at Te Whatu Ora Capital Coast and Hutt Valley.

Marian Luctkar-Flude

Dr. Marian Luctkar-Flude is an Associate Professor at Queen’s University, School of Nursing in Canada and Co-Founder and Co-President of the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators using Simulation (CAN-Sim). She has extensive simulation experience and has received numerous awards for her innovations. Her current program of research focuses on virtual simulation game design and faculty development. Highlights include virtual simulations about addressing racism in the classroom and clinical settings.

Karyn Madden

Karyn and Vicki are senior lectures at the Southern Institute of Technology, with a passion for experiential learning and self-awareness within nursing through the use of creative simulation. Collectively they have over 50 years' experience in nursing and have worked in education for decades. The basis of their groundbreaking workshop presents collective findings from their individual doctoral thesis and informs the basis of the workshop.

Maggie Meeks

Maggie Meeks Paediatric Career began in the UK Royal Air Force (RAF), stimulating my interest in Education, Human Factors and Simulation. I came to New Zealand in 2008 and I worked as a Neonatal Consultant Paediatrician for Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) until November 2021. I continue to work as an Educational Supervisor, Coach and Medical Lead for In Situ Simulation Based Learning and I am currently studying a Masters in Counselling.

James Naismith

James Naismith BN, CCRN, MBA is an experienced Registered Nurse in Australia. He has extensive experience in Oncology nursing and Critical nursing and was formally a Critical Care Nurse Educator in a major metropolitan teaching hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He has spent considerable time teaching as part of a nursing faculty in several nursing courses across Australia.

In addition to his clinical and education background, James has worked with digital solutions and varying Learning Management Systems and understands the role that technology plays in health education. His use of simulation and embedding it into his teaching methods, has been the cornerstone of his professional practice throughout this time.

For the past nine years, James has worked with Laerdal Medical in a multitude of education roles and he is currently the Digital Programs and Education Manager for the Asia Pacific region. In addition, he is also a PhD candidate and is working with a leading university in Australia as a Senior Lecturer in Simulation. His time at Laerdal and his professional background has enabled him to understand and appreciate the challenges of the clinical and educational health professions and he is passionate about finding solutions to these challenges.

Brad Peckler

Brad Peckler after a chief resident year in 1999 at Beth Israel Medical Center became a core faculty member of the Cornell University EM Residency.   In 2004 he become a core faculty member in the EM Residency at the University of South Florida where he was the director of simulation.  He has been working in New Zealand since 2009 at Wellington Hospital and is the medical lead for the simulation program.  He is the current chair of the New Zealand association for Simulation in Healthcare. Simulation and educational process has been his main focus of teaching and research (>60 publications) and has traveled the globe presenting and giving courses in trauma, simulation, and ultrasound.

Michael Sheedy

MichaelSheedy has been supporting simulation at the Otago University and Health NZ - Waitaha for the last 14 years. Michael currently leads the Bioengineering team which supports innovation in the simulation space, providing tools to allow simulation education. As part of this service, 3D printing is used as a tool to enable ideas and simulate anatomy. This has lead to many devices that allow for learning opportunities in the clinical space.

Jane Torrie

Dr Jane Torrie is a long-time anaesthetist at Te Toka Tumai Auckland who took on part-time work in 2005 with the University of Auckland and became deeply entangled in medical simulation. 

She led the establishment of the Simulation Centre for Patient Simulation at the University and fostered a simulation programme with a particular focus on interprofessional education. 

Jane is a past president of NZASH and until recently the Auckland Supervisor of EMAC  (a mandatory human factors course for anaesthetists established 20 years ago). 

She has enjoyed a major role in the NetworkZ programme since its inception in 2014, which gave her experience in developing and delivering in-situ interprofessional team training in operating rooms and in emergency departments across New Zealand.

Jane Tyerman

Dr. Jane Tyerman is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada and Co-Founder and Co-President of the Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators using Simulation (CAN-Sim). She has extensive experience in clinical and virtual simulation design. Her current program of research focuses on evaluating outcomes of virtual simulation and virtual reality simulation in nursing and interprofessional education.

Anina van der Walt

Anina van der Walt is the Technical and Education Services Specialist for Laerdal New Zealand. Anina brings a diverse range of expertise to her role, with a background as a rural paramedic for St John Ambulance, as well as experience in pharmacology and clinical trials. Having undergone extensive simulation training with Laerdal simulators during her paramedic training, she has firsthand appreciation of the participant perspective. Anina's passion lies in empowering customers to maximise the potential of their equipment, to optimally attain learning outcomes and create a simulation environment where participants are eager to come back for more.
