The Burnett Foundation Aotearoa

Burnett Foundation Aotearoa (previously New Zealand AIDS Foundation) has been at the forefront of HIV prevention in Aotearoa for nearly 40 years.

Our Kaupapa has always been to have a human-centred, science-led, sex-positive approach to public health. Key workstreams of advocacy, education, and support have always been and remain our key pillars. We also acknowledge our commitments to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, to people living with and affected by HIV and to our very environment.

With the same passion as those who have come before us, we’re continuing to work hard to prevent HIV transmission, reduce stigma, and maximise the wellbeing of those most affected. Through our community engagement, behaviour-change marketing campaigns, testing, and therapeutic support services, we reach people across the country.

Our vision is an Aotearoa with zero HIV transmission, where all people living with HIV thrive, and rainbow and takatāpui communities enjoy great sexual health.

The study is about sex between men, HIV prevention and blood donation in Aotearoa New Zealand, led by the University of Auckland and University of Otago, in partnership with community organisations and the HIV sector. The aim of the survey is to collect data to inform alternatives to the current blood donation policy, which excludes many men who have sex with men, and also to improve HIV prevention and sexual health services for these communities. Overall 3,838 individuals provided their data to the survey. The study team are here to share the findings with the sector and stakeholders in the new era of combination HIV prevention.
