Meet our Speakers


Dr Terryann Clark PhD, MPH, RN
Ngāpuhi 

Terryann Clark is part-time Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, The University of Auckland, New Zealand, and part-time public health promotion coordinator for Mahitahi Hauora PHO in Whangarei.

Terryann Clark has been a founding member of the Adolescent Health Research Group since 1998 and has led the Youth’12 national youth health and wellbeing survey and is co-lead of the Youth’19 Rangatahi Smart Survey. Nearly 30 years ago, she was a sexual health nurse/health advisor and helped establish the Auckland Peer Sexuality Support Programme. She has worked as an Adolescent Nurse Specialist in various roles, an academic and an advocate.

 Her major research interests are: Youth health, indigenous health, mental health, sexual health, advocacy, and healthy youth development with a strong focus on addressing inequity for whanau Māori. 



Joshua Iosefo-Williams 

Joshua Iosefo-Williams is proud to be Samoan, Niuean, Queer and from South Auckland. 

He is an award-winning writer and director for theatre and film and is the founder of Odd Family Arts Collective Charitable Trust. Joshua recently graduated with his Masters in Philosophy with First Class honours and is currently studying towards a PHD in Sociology at the University of Auckland



Dr Joanna Hicks 

Joanna Hicks is a biochemist and molecular biologist at the University of Waikato. 

Her research focuses on understanding how the sexually transmitted bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae obtains essential minerals for growth and evasion of the human immune system. She is using this information to identify and develop new antibiotics to overcome antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea infection.



Hannah Watson Frank

Hannah Watson-Frank (she/her) is a digital maven with a passion for creating positive change in the world.

With over five years’ experience in digital marketing for not-for-profits, Hannah is proficient at delivering unique digital campaigns to effect change on limited budgets.

Hannah is currently the Digital Marketing Specialist at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation where she delivers an integrated and effective digital program and works across their award-winning behaviour change & fundraising marketing campaigns.



Nadine Riwai

Ngati Porou, Te Uri o Hau, Ngai Takoto

Nadine Riwai is Gisborne born and bred, living and nursing in Waikato. 

She is a specialty clinical nurse and regional coordinator cervical screening Waikato DHB and member and passionate supporter of the Smear your Mea charitable trust.

Nadine is working on the ground advocating, supporting, sharing awareness, screening (home visits, events, community, marae, clinics) wherever possible... she is there. 




Dr Jillian Tipene

Te Rarawa, Ngāti Kahu

 Jillian Tipene is a health promotion and research-project leader with Te Whāriki Takapou. 

 Her research interests include Māori community sexual and reproductive health and wellbeing, Kaupapa Māori research, mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori. 

Dr Tipene is currently pursuing Te Tohu Paerua o Te Reo Kairangi, a masters level te reo Māori programme, at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
